Faux Chalkboard Signs

I handmade these signs for a friend's wedding.

Psssst!  I will let you all in on a little DIY HACK...

For any chalk inspired signage, I use a black paper with a lot of tooth to it and a white colored pencil.  I am a big believer in investing in some high quality PRISMACOLOR colored pencils—full sets are not cheap, but you can buy them as singles at your local art supply shop.  The color pencil eliminates the potential for smearing that inevitably happens with hand lettering in chalk.   It also means you don't have to deal with the sticky mess of coating your final product with a fixative (although you still may want to do a light spray if your colored pencil is super soft or your paper is not very rough).  Using a colored pencil allows the flexibility for a line to taper more freely and gives you a fine drawing tip to focus on tiny details.
